Welcome to Year 5!
The class teacher is Miss Mallon and the amazing Miss Smith is our teaching assistant this year. We are looking forward to a wonderful year full of learning and exciting opportunities.
Please see our Autumn newsletter below to find out about our learning in more detail.
Routines of the day
- The school day starts at 8:45am. We know some children are very eager to get to school but we remind families that school cannot be responsible for children who arrive before 08.45hrs
- Morning starter: arithmetic
- Playtimes:
- Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 10:40-10:55
- Tuesday & Thursday: 10:20-10:35 with the rest of KS2. This is to allow for a grammar lesson afterwards.
- Healthy snacks only (fruit). Pupils may bring or purchase snacks at morning break time. The kitchen staff provide toast at a minimal cost and this can be purchased on parent pay. Milk can also be purchased on parent pay.
- Water bottles should be labelled and brought to school everyday. These should only contain water (not juice)
- End of day routines:
- 15:25 End of school
- Children in year 5 and 6 can ONLY walk home if they have given in a permission form
- Britannia school bags only. No backpacks as this is a healthy and safety concern in the corridors.
- Children should come to school suitable for the weather. They should bring a coat and if necessary hats, gloves, scarves etc.
- No trainers. Black school shoes only.
PE
- In Autumn 1, children have swimming and PE on Fridays.
- PE kit: Green school PE t-shirt, green shorts. If the children are taking PE outside, tracksuit bottoms are allowed. These must be black or navy.
Music
- This year, children in year 5 have the opportunity to play the violin and the cornet. Children are encouraged to take these home to practise (after signing an agreement form)
Homework
- Homework will be given out on paper on Thursdays when necessary. This is to be handed in the following Thursday.
- Children should read everyday for 20 minutes at home. 5 signatures from a parent/carer should be in their reading log each week to show this.
- Children should use TT Rockstars for 10 minutes everyday.
- Spelling: No spelling homework will be given. We are starting a new spelling scheme in school that is dyslexia friendly, called Scode. Our first spelling focus for this half term will be on the sound /f/ coded f, ff, ph, gh. Some of the curriculum words with this sound are familiar, foreign, forty, frequently, profession, sacrifice, sufficient, physical. Please feel free to practise these at home (optional)
- If the children do not complete their homework activities, they will have the opportunity to do so by Friday. If it is still not brought in on Friday, it will be completed on Friday at breaktime.
